Valued Member of The Local One,

The IUEC has developed a new elevator safety bill which was drawn up thanks to the work preservation fund. This bill has been put into law in a number of states. This bill will be proposed in Albany now and on January 10th with the help of lobbyists, the support of the IUEC work preservation fund and our members support. We hope to pass this law in New York State. This safety bill will require the licensing of persons engaged in the design, construction, operation, inspection, maintain, alteration and repair of elevators and other automatic people moving devices. New York State will require any of the above to have apprenticeship training and an education program to be able to apply for this license. At Local One our apprenticeship program meets and surpasses the requirements needed to get this license. Since we have completed the set apprenticeship program every Local One mechanic will be licensed if this safety bill goes to law.

Organizing
The non-union presence has grown much greater in New York and it is up to all the members of Local One to get involved in the organizing effort. Always keep your eyes open for starting jobs. Do not be afraid to stop in and find out who is installing the elevators on the site. When you see an elevator mechanic in the street whose company you have never heard of or have seen, say hello and introduce yourself. Find out if they are union or non-union. It is best to try and open a line of communication with them. This could lead to a potential organizing effort. If you have a good line of communication with them always let that person do the talking. This can give you an idea of how happy or unhappy they are about their employer. Get their name and telephone number and give them your information and Brother Tom Moore’s phone number 917-567-6040.

Thank You
I would like to present this letter-
I am writing to thank you for the overwhelming show of support that I received from the Executive Board and the rank and file of Local One in my recent election for Trustee of the Village of Mamaroneck. I would not have been successful without that help. I had a long and hard campaign against well-funded and ruthless opponents. Knowing that the Bothers and Sisters of Local One were behind me was a source of strength and inspiration that sustained me during some of the harder days. It is important for union members to get back involved in political process and claim the rights and benefits that we deserve. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. We have to stay active politically and teach our members to vote their own self-interest. Local One has made a great start by helping to get one of their own elected. I will always represent the interests of working men and women while I serve in office. Thanks you for helping me achieve this goal. I promise I won’t let you down.

Fraternally,
Tom Murphy

Local One would like to thank Brother Ronald Paul for his generous donation to the Scholarship fund.
