Valued Member of The Local One:
We at Local One, would like you to enjoy your Labor Day weekend. While you enjoy your day, please remember our four Brothers and Sisters who fought to get the working conditions and standards, that we are now able to enjoy. Also please take a minute for our American troops that are fighting for us.
It has been three weeks since out Brothers and Sisters voted to accept the Thyssen Krupp and the EMANY contract. We are happy to see our fellow Brothers and Sisters back to work. I would like to thank our negotiating committee for their countless days, nights, and weekends working on the contract. There were probably many sleepless nights thinking about what is right for our membership as a whole. We thank you for your time and dedication to bring our members to the best possible contract. Now that our contract is set to expire in 3 years and 7 months, there are many things that we, as a Union, must do to prepare ourselves better for the next contract. The first is that our Local must have a strike fund. This would prepare us for whatever expenses our Union will incur due to a strike or a lockout. The next is very important to our Brothers and Sisters. We must start saving now for the next contract. By taking out twenty-five dollars a week, not including interest, you should have at least four thousand, three-hundred and seventy-five dollars saved by the time our contract is expired.
POLITICS
Moving forward with the times, Local One must get more politically active. Going out and voting is very important, but we need to do more. Local One is planning to start a PAC Fund (Political Action Committee). Below is the information Brother Tom Moore sent to me explaining the benefits of a PAC Fund: The Local One, IUEC Voluntary Pac Fund will raise funds by way of: Direct Solicitations, Raffles, Bike Runs, Golf Outings, Dinners, Sale of T-shirts and Hats, etc. etc. Using voluntary contributions from our members, the Local One, IUEC PAC will help support political candidates from both parties, who champion legislative issues that assist labor and our affiliated contractors. These include statewide elected officials, state legislators and county and town officials.
The PAC will successfully push for a range of legislation, including:
? Workers' Compensation Reform
? Prevailing Wage Protections/Enforcement
? Elevator Safety Bill
? Unemployment Insurance Increases
? Unemployment Insurance for Lockout Workers
The Local One IUEC PAC will work hard to expand Local One IUEC involvement in campaigns, governmental affairs and economic development issues. One of the primary functions of the Local One IUEC PAC is to give elevator workers & their families a voice in the legislative process at the state & local levels. When in session, both of these bodies draft and attempt to pass bills that deeply impact union members in the construction industry.
